A heartwarming victory is only marred by the situation itself: one of the wealthiest counties in the U.S. claiming that it could not afford the $60,000 that it would take to care for the child over the next 3 years, being used as a justification to skirt its responsibilities to provide protective services for an unaccompanied minor.
While the only claim made public was one of economic considerations, the story of this Mexican kid who got screwed at the border by DHS, enslaved in debt peonage in Vermont, & ultimately feel victim to the administrative bureaucracy of New York State is one of blatant racism & human rights violations that should put us all to shame!
Please don't tell me that he should've been deported: it's the law that he was entitled to SIJ status; CBP should have put him into protective custody the first time he entered, & the New York counties involved should have advocated on his behalf once they had custody of him!
This is a story of government officials going out of their way to circumvent Congressional law - & we need to ask ourselves why! And economics is just not going to cut it!
They should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law!
